2024 NCAAF PRESEASON WATCHLIST CALENDAR

The watch lists will include names of returning standout players and will commence as preseason conference media days finish.

 

The 2024 NCAAF PRESEASON WATCHLIST CALENDAR is here!

The National College Football Awards Association will unveil preseason watch lists for 16 of its awards from Monday, July 29 through Tuesday, Aug. 13, beginning with the Maxwell Award and ending with the Butkus Award.

The watch lists will include names of returning standout players and will commence as preseason conference media days finish.

The Butkus Award watch list will close the 12-day rollout with a tribute to the award’s legendary namesake, Dick Butkus, who passed away on Oct. 5, 2023.

Nine of the NCFAA awards will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards, to be aired live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 12. The complete awards calendar, featuring the dates of semifinalists and finalists for all 24 NCFAA awards, will be released at a later date.

“Is it a 4-peat if Georgia wins next year?”  – Bud Elliott

Chip Patterson: Who would be your title pick next season Bud?

Bud Elliott: Georgia. They return the best QB of all of the…what we would consider the immediate contenders. From the chatter it sounds like Dumas Johnson was gonna get Wally Pipped. He got dinged up and it was like “Oh! CJ Allen is a future ten year pro.” Wilson is coming along. It seemed like Georgia got the right guys to not declare. They have the QB coming back, so I would pick Georgia.

Tom Fornelli: I would also pick Georgia. And then the question is if Michigan’s title gets vacated is it a three peat for Georgia.

Bud Elliott: Is it a 4-peat if Georgia wins next year?
Georgia’s schedule is certainly tough as the chat is pointing out. But you have to consider things differently in this new era.

Chip Patterson: 12 team expansion

(They discussed other possible teams)

Ohio State- Dog backed into the corner mentality. “Desperation Day………..Part III”

Texas- If Arch lives up to being Arch Manning (Isn’t Ewers back? Weird comment unless he changed his mind.)

Michigan- Got enough coming back to make a run. Perhaps even more run heavy. Defense is gonna be great.

Arizona- 18 starters back and easy conference

Oregon- Have to put them up there. Roster is rapidly improving. Dylan Gabriel is a vet.

Penn State- Chip doesn’t like. Tom doesn’t like. Conference is tougher. May make the playoffs, but no real chance.

Alabama- Milroe may not be likely to improve, but certainly a possiblility he does.

Bud: I like that there are so many teams we can’t rule out. If Georgia plays so well it’s a foregone conclusion, you still have to go win three tough games in a row.

Washington- losing too much off the roster. Not in the playoff.

If Harbaugh goes NFL would Kalen D. pull a Kevin Durant?

Alabama Fans Are OBSESSED with the Georgia Bulldogs! My recent interactions lead me to believe that the majority of Alabama Football fans are suffering from a massive inferiority complex and are wrestling with a severe identity crisis. I can see no other reason they would be so drawn to the Georgia Bulldogs and the content about Kirby Smart and his program. I suppose it’s because now that Nick Saban is gone they know things will never be the same and coping with this new reality is not going to be easy.

2023 SEC FOOTBALL MEDIA DAYS – COMMISSIONER GREG SANKEY

 

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey opened the week of 2023 SEC Media Days from Nashville, TN on Monday, pointing out the unparalleled success that the conference is currently enjoying and its place in the college football world…squarely at the top… and marked the event as the league’s final SEC Media Days as a 14-team league as Oklahoma and Texas are poised to join the conference in 2024.

The first big topic Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey discussed that caught my attention was NIL. The Commissioner began by stating any discussions he’s been involved in around the active concept of student-athletes receiving economic benefit from their use of their name, image, and likeness is “not about taking away. Not about taking away these new name, image, and likeness
opportunities.” 

Sankey went on to speak to “the stories told and others not told — of promises made but not fulfilled, of inducements offered but not provided, of empty commitments of NIL agreements that created more questions than provided answers, and other behaviors in
this space that rightly cause concern.”

“The reality is our student-athletes deserve something better than a patchwork of state laws that support their name, image, and likeness activities, if support is the right
word. Our student-athletes deserve something better than a race to the bottom at the state legislature level. As the efforts are made to create what are perceived as a competitive edge through state laws that are not overseen.

Future student-athletes, those who right now might be 15 or 16 or 17 years old, they deserve something better than to need to sort through a fully unregulated marketplace, being approached by individuals who present themselves as something that they may not be, where anyone can purchase card stock and run it through a printer and call themselves an agent on a business card, and then engage in making offers to young people that are neither transparent, that do not include protections that many of us would expect to be normal. It makes it difficult for young people to both understand and navigate this free for all as they’re trying to make life-guarding and life-changing decisions.”

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey discussed declares the focus for the future of the SEC Football Championship game is in Atlanta, saying “We are going to focus our football game on what is really the envy of the college football championship world, and that’s what we do in Atlanta.”

Sankey called for the enforcement of gaming regulations and protection of participants in all states with legalized gambling, and then touched on one of the hottest topics across the landscape of college football…conference realignment and expansion. The Commissioner concluded his remarks with this statement.

“Do I think it’s done? People will say, well, I get to decide that,” Sankey said. “Right now it appears others are going to decide that before we have to make any decisions.”

“My view is we know who we are. We’re comfortable as a league. We’re focused on our growth to 16. We’ve restored rivalries. We’re geographically contiguous with the right kind of philosophical alignment, and we can stay at that level of super conference.”
